Emerging Artists
One can be sure that the Kreativ U-turn Apprenticeship Project was so much more than just arts ‘n’ crafts time. This exhilarating project awakened a flurry of feelings, reflection, and opportunity to grow both as people and as artists. Through our Exploring Creativity in Depth™ training as well as creating our Summer Camp programs, we have learned and honed a variety of new skills that we will carry on in our future endeavours.
The KUT project was, to us, so much more than just a chance to show off our artistic talents. Here we were challenged, both as artists and individuals – learning how to collaborate, how to make decisions on the fly, and how to utilize each of our unique skills effectively. We were given the chance to work with a variety of age groups and personalities. We integrated so many different mediums into our program - art making became so much more than just painting a picture! It is teamwork, mutual inspiration, and commitment. Within this challenge we developed a particular sensitivity - a gentle balance of comfort and seriousness - that allowed both the children and us, the emerging artists, to comfortably develop our own perceptions and understand others’ perceptions while simultaneously challenging the self through the creative imagination.
For many of us, the chance to pause and reflect, both on the experiences we were having in the present as well as those from the past, was a pleasant surprise. Through Exploring Creativity in Depth, we got in touch with experiences that formed identity, experiences that shaped who we are as artists and, ultimately, as people. Drawing inspiration from those sources releases endless opportunities - the creative imagination is truly endless, no matter how old you are, or how “artsy” you think you are! The realization that we have the potential to do and create anything that we can imagine was definitely an invaluable experience for us all.
The KUT team is wholeheartedly grateful for the opportunity that the Milkweed Collective has given us. We would like to thank our mentors for passing on their knowledge and skills and for trusting us to bring this project into full bloom.
