Exploring Creativity in Depth™ program at Neilson Park Creative Centre
June 16 and 17, 2015
Students from James Culnan Catholic School arrived at Neilson Park Creative Centre to participate in the Exploring Creativity in Depth™ program. This occasion marked the first time the Kreativ U-turn team facilitated the ECiD program to a large group of children.
Grade 4, 5 and 6 students settled in front of the Hall Gallery doors awaiting a welcome from the ECiD facilitators. Robin McPhail-Dempsey, KUT mentor, greeted the students and asked if they remembered to bring their imaginations with them. Together we performed an exercise to collect the imagination that lives around us.
Participants moved around the Hall Gallery, viewing the collage exhibit, in preparation for the warm-up activity. Lisa and Evan led the students in a name game, allowing each participant to introduce herself/himself to the group. They guided participants in creating an active machine. Students moved in rhythm with their peers until their collective actions exploded!
Once experiencing the visioning exercise, the students moved into the studio for the 1st picture making. Some were hesitant to cover the paper with an initial colour. Others made big arm movements across the desk. Participants used lots of energy to blend colours with paper towel and their fingertips. Once the drawings were complete, students were led into the Hall Gallery to discuss their works.
In the afternoon, participants viewed the works of emerging artists in a Show-n-Tell presentation. Alana discussed her journey of artistic identity from realism to abstraction. She shared music she composed while the group viewed her works. Khadija presented her sketchbook and discussed her artistic process. Students were able to view her detailed works up close.
Upon completing the 2nd picture, participants gathered in the Hall Gallery to Show and Tell their works. Students confidently led their peers in a group discussion about the colours, shapes and stories within their pictures. The day concluded with students and staff filling out questionnaires while enjoying freezies.
